Top Mental Health Tips from Therapists

Posted on January 28, 2025January 28, 2025 by Admin

I asked all my therapist friends to share their favorite mental health tips. Seventy-five responded, and I’m going to share my favorite tips with you and help you apply them to your life today!

1. Connect with People

Connecting with others is essential for both physical and mental health. Bernardo P. says to get together with friends, even if it’s for a beer or coffee. If you’re on your own, go outside to an event where there are people, even if you don’t socialize. Human contact always helps.

2. Use Your Support System

Amelia advises not to hesitate to use your supports when needed. Friends, family, and therapy play a crucial role in resilience and dealing with grief or loss. Finding a way to get help from your friends and family has been shown to be one of the most important variables in getting better.

3. Nurture Genuine Relationships

Anne Marie Albano recommends nurturing genuine, caring relationships at home, with friends, and at work. Show up at social situations regularly, ask open-ended questions, and engage in activities outside the usual setting to build stronger connections.

4. Perform Random Acts of Kindness

To strengthen existing relationships, do something nice for a friend or family member. Spend uninterrupted time together without devices to deepen your bond.

5. Move Your Body

Exercise is crucial for mental health. Kari Scovel’s tweet highlights the importance of moving your body. Lynette Lau and Erin Haugen emphasize balancing rest with exercise, even when exhausted. Movement helps in combating depression and enhancing overall well-being.

6. Find Meaning

Payton Jones advises not to chase after happiness but to find things that are meaningful to you. Laura Dunson suggests focusing on what gives your life meaning rather than comparing it to others’ social media highlights. Identify your values by imagining your 100th birthday and what you want people to say about you.

7. Experience Emotions

Trisa Amozeg emphasizes understanding that all feelings, even unpleasant ones, are doing an important job. Labeling emotions can help in communicating better and reducing their intensity.

8. Embrace the Moment

Andrew Riley suggests being non-judgmentally present. Use grounding techniques to stay present in the moment, like noticing five things around you, touching four textures, listening to three sounds, paying attention to two smells, and noticing one taste.

9. Focus on Breathing

Roll for Change advises stopping and taking a moment several times a day to focus on your breath. Match inhales and exhales to slow your breathing and reduce stress.

10. Prioritize Sleep

Dani Arigo, Shobhika Jaju, and Rene Zweig highlight the importance of sleep. Maintain a regular sleep schedule and deal with insomnia by getting out of bed if you can’t sleep and avoiding screens.

11. Manage Negative Thoughts

Michael Mularkey reminds us that thoughts and feelings, especially negative ones, are not facts. Jessica Divento suggests holding space for duality, accepting that multiple truths can exist simultaneously.

12. Practice Self-Care

Muqaddas and Deborah Glasofer stress the importance of self-care activities like taking baths, exercising, reading for leisure, and spending time with loved ones. Josue Cardona advises cutting toxic people out of your life to maintain mental well-being.

13. Embrace What You Love

Andrea Letamendi encourages finding something you love and unapologetically embracing it. Embrace your interests and passions without hiding them.

Conclusion

Incorporating these mental health tips from therapists into your daily routine can significantly enhance your well-being. Connect with people, use your support system, nurture genuine relationships, move your body, find meaning, experience emotions, embrace the moment, focus on breathing, prioritize sleep, manage negative thoughts, practice self-care, and embrace what you love. Remember, small changes can lead to a happier and healthier life.
